There are indications that asphalt mixes produced with clay modified bitumen can comply with the strict requirements of airport pavements. A preliminary research showed a improvement of bitumen properties like ageing and viscosity by adding clay modifications. Because of this CROW’s Coordinating Committee on Airfield Pavements decided to support the research on possible application of clay modifications in asphalt mixes for airport pavements.
